Francesco Baccaglini

Partner - tax area manager of Alvarium

Keep your eyes on the stars and your feet on the ground (Theodore Roosevelt)

After classical studies, he graduated in law from the newly founded University of Insubria, the first to discuss a thesis in economic policy (in the Como silk district), although he took all his exams at the State University of Milan.

Immediately after graduation, he moved to Sydney, Australia, to attend an internship at a local law firm and later worked at the Italian Chamber of Commerce. Meanwhile, he took courses in international trade law at the University of Technology in Sydney. He returned to Italy after a year and worked at his family law firm, where he developed a passion for tax law. He attended the Sole 24 ore’s VII master’s degree in tax law and practice. Upon completion, he moved to Brussels, where he worked for two years in the Assonime office, following European taxation.

In 2004 he returned to Italy and worked at the office of Dr. Siegfried Mayr, one of Italy’s leading experts in international tax law. In 2011 he moved to Lugano, where he worked at Starfin Sa, the family office of one of Italy’s most influential entrepreneurs. He obtained his master’s degree in tax law at Supsi University with a comparative thesis on the taxation of financial annuities in Italy, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

In 2016, following the demerger of Starfin, he followed part of the management in Alvarium, a multi-family office of which he became a partner with responsibility for the tax area. He is in charge of tax optimization of client portfolios, tax analysis of illiquid investments (private equity funds, direct investments, club deals, and real estate), and estate and estate planning.

He attended Ipsoa’s master’s degree in wealth management and estate planning in Milan.

He is a speaker at conferences and the author of articles on tax issues. He is a lawyer in Italy and is a fiduciary accountant in Ticino.

In his (little) spare time, he enjoys reading business books and biographies, traveling, and sports (skiing, hiking, diving).

Distinguishing skills:

  • Financial taxation (optimization of portfolios and illiquid investments)
  • International taxation (establishment of companies, trusts, and foreign vehicles)
  • Wealth planning (both for generational continuity and asset protection)
