Nebbiolo of the Alps: A Heroic Wine Putting Valtellina on the Global Map
The rising fame of Nebbiolo delle Alpi is transforming Valtellina into a must-visit destination for wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs. The trend was confirmed by the inaugural ViVa Vini Valtellina 2025, held during peak harvest season: over 1,500 visitors—80% from outside the province, including international guests—flocked to Sondrio, establishing it as the Alpine wine capital.
Valtellina offered unique wine experiences that highlight the region’s natural beauty and heritage, with the elegant Chiavennasca grape (local Nebbiolo) in the spotlight. Alongside traditional tastings in the area’s “heroic” wineries—members of Italy’s only consortium boasting two DOCG labels, Valtellina Superiore and Sforzato di Valtellina—visitors embraced activities such as vineyard trekking, e-bike tours, helicopter flights over terraced vineyards, and cultural walks exploring hidden valley treasures.
ViVa 2025 showcased Valtellina’s unique viticultural heritage: 820 hectares of vineyards up to 800 meters in altitude and 2,500 km of UNESCO-recognized dry-stone walls.
“ViVa Vini Valtellina 2025 received excellent feedback from wine lovers, visitors, and industry professionals, especially for the quality of the experiences offered,” said Mamete Prevostini, president of the Consorzio di Tutela.
