\u201cThe origin lies in the fusion of two very different paths<\/strong>,\u201d explains Mike<\/strong>. \u201cI come from a long career in finance<\/strong>, 26 years with Standard Chartered<\/strong>, with experience in Asia<\/strong> and Africa<\/strong>. The bank\u2019s motto was Here for Good<\/em>: being present in countries, being part of communities<\/strong>, and that deeply influenced my values<\/strong>, teaching me to build relationships<\/strong>, to listen<\/strong>, and to give back<\/strong>.\u201d \u201cMy story,\u201d says Neena<\/strong>, \u201ccomes from elsewhere. I was born in Mauritius<\/strong> to Indian<\/strong> parents and lived for a long time in the United Kingdom<\/strong>. I\u2019ve always had a great curiosity for languages<\/strong>, cultures<\/strong>, architecture<\/strong>. The idea of settling in a place I couldn\u2019t understand made me uncomfortable. But wherever I felt I belonged<\/strong>, I could build<\/strong>. That desire for belonging<\/strong> was the seed from which everything grew.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How did you arrive in Umbria? And at Torre Bisenzio?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt one point,\u201d says Mike<\/strong>, \u201cour careers<\/strong> were taking us to London<\/strong>. We realized that\u2019s not what we wanted, so we started looking at Italy<\/strong>. We made many trips to central Italy<\/strong> from Singapore<\/strong>. Umbria<\/strong> attracted us more than Tuscany<\/strong>: less touristy<\/strong>, more authentic<\/strong>, quieter<\/strong>. A true land<\/strong>, still untamed<\/strong>, that asks for respect<\/strong> before it reveals itself.\u201d \u201cWe were looking for a farmhouse<\/strong>,\u201d continues Neena<\/strong>, \u201cbut none convinced us. Until, on a cold winter day<\/strong>, we discovered a remote hill<\/strong>. The road was impassable<\/strong>; we had to wait until the next day to climb up. But when we saw the view<\/strong>, we immediately knew it was our place. A place that asked a lot, but promised even more.\u201d \u201cIt was completely in ruins<\/strong>, but I immediately saw the potential<\/strong>. Neena<\/strong>, just to be safe, had me sign a paper stating it was all my idea\u2026\u201d jokes the former Standard Chartered<\/strong> executive. \u201cWe wanted to create something that would bring the land back to life<\/strong>,\u201d adds Neena<\/strong>. \u201cWe started with great effort<\/strong>: we were still living in Singapore<\/strong>, I was pregnant<\/strong>, Mike<\/strong> was traveling between there, London<\/strong>, and Italy<\/strong>. The first seasons<\/strong> were difficult, but every step brought us closer to an idea of responsibility<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the local community?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt first,\u201d Mike<\/strong> notes, \u201cwe didn\u2019t do enough. We only knew the people working for us. Then we realized how important it was to integrate<\/strong>. Eating at local restaurants<\/strong>, making ourselves known<\/strong>, participating<\/strong>. From that moment, everything changed.\u201d \u201cSome of our collaborators,\u201d says Neena<\/strong>, \u201cexperience the wine cycle<\/strong> from start to finish. It\u2019s not just work<\/strong>: it\u2019s a collective narrative<\/strong> that involves them and makes them proud<\/strong>, where personal<\/strong> and professional life<\/strong> grow together constantly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are your founding values?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAuthenticity<\/strong>, sustainability<\/strong>, quality<\/strong>,\u201d answers Mike<\/strong> proudly. \u201cWe studied the agricultural history<\/strong> of this land, placed ourselves in the hands of Italian experts<\/strong> in agriculture<\/strong>, farming<\/strong>, and viticulture<\/strong>. We relied on professionals like Andrea Rosati<\/strong>, Francesco De Filippis<\/strong>, Adriano Zago<\/strong>. Every decision is part of a broader design<\/strong>.\u201d \u201cComing from outside this world,\u201d adds Neena<\/strong>, \u201cwe committed to learning<\/strong>, studying<\/strong>, trusting people<\/strong>. And we share everything<\/strong> with our team: every choice<\/strong>, every consultation<\/strong>, every change<\/strong>. Even with the workers in the fields. Transparency<\/strong> generates participation<\/strong>, and participation<\/strong> creates pride<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ve introduced technology and innovation in a land and a world deeply rooted in tradition. How was that received?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt first, with skepticism<\/strong>,\u201d explains Neena<\/strong>, \u201cbut then the results<\/strong> became evident. Those who work with us learn<\/strong>, grow<\/strong>. And often develop their own activities<\/strong> thanks to these skills<\/strong>. Technology<\/strong> does not replace<\/strong>, it elevates<\/strong> work.\u201d \u201cWe never impose<\/strong> anything as a principle,\u201d adds Mike<\/strong>. \u201cIf something doesn\u2019t work, we change<\/strong> it, we work to improve<\/strong>, not to be right<\/strong>. And when we make mistakes<\/strong>, we admit<\/strong> them. That\u2019s the pact<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s a clear connection between your wines and storytelling. How did that idea originate?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur labels<\/strong>,\u201d Mike<\/strong> explains proudly, \u201ctell stories<\/strong>: about the land<\/strong>, our family<\/strong>, the connection between local and global<\/strong>. We want the community<\/strong> to see itself reflected<\/strong> and visitors<\/strong> to understand. Each bottle<\/strong> is a fragment of dialogue between cultures<\/strong>.\u201d \u201cAnd we offer hospitality<\/strong> following the same principle,\u201d adds Neena<\/strong>. \u201cIt\u2019s the same thing: people come back because they feel authenticity<\/strong>, because they\u2019ve experienced real hospitality<\/strong>. It\u2019s not a place from a magazine<\/strong>: it\u2019s a lived-in home<\/strong>, cared for<\/strong>, built over time<\/strong>. A home built<\/strong>, furnished<\/strong>, and inhabited<\/strong> with hands dirty with soil<\/strong> and an open heart<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How did you deal with the administrative and professional side?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe found extraordinary financial consultants<\/strong> in Rome<\/strong> who have supported us for twenty years<\/strong>,\u201d says Mike<\/strong>. \u201cAnd then connections with surveyors<\/strong>, artisans<\/strong>, local administrators<\/strong>. Like our collaborators<\/strong>, they are also from the area<\/strong>. There is mutual trust<\/strong> and no relationship is purely professional<\/strong>: every alliance<\/strong> is built over time.\u201d \u201cWe also try to be present<\/strong> in community moments<\/strong>,\u201d adds Neena<\/strong>. \u201cWe organize events with the Municipality<\/strong>, we harvest<\/strong> and cook together<\/strong> with our workers<\/strong>, their families<\/strong>, and their friends<\/strong>. The community<\/strong> is part of Torre Bisenzio<\/strong>: it\u2019s not rhetoric<\/strong>, it\u2019s real<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can Torre Bisenzio be a replicable model?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes, but it\u2019s not a formula<\/strong>,\u201d Mike<\/strong> clarifies. \u201cYou must put in your soul<\/strong>, time<\/strong>, curiosity<\/strong>. You must learn<\/strong>, make mistakes<\/strong>, stay<\/strong>, put down physical and emotional roots<\/strong>. Only then will the land recognize you<\/strong>. Having a project<\/strong> is not enough, you have to live it<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And your children? What does your project represent for them?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur sons and daughters<\/strong>,\u201d says Neena<\/strong>, \u201ccome every year with their families<\/strong> and their children<\/strong> love the farm life<\/strong>. For them it\u2019s a place of freedom<\/strong>, discovery<\/strong>, roots<\/strong>. Our youngest son is still learning, he\u2019s learning Italian<\/strong>. I asked him: \u2018Do you see yourself here in the future?\u2019 He answered, \u2018Yes.\u2019 But you need entrepreneurial vision<\/strong>, beyond love for the place<\/strong>. We don\u2019t want to leave them a burden<\/strong>, but an opportunity<\/strong>. Legacy<\/strong>, for us, is not just inheritance<\/strong>: it\u2019s commitment<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What advice would you give to those wanting to follow a similar path?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFirst, get to know the people<\/strong> and learn the language<\/strong>. Otherwise, why come to Italy<\/strong>? Without listening<\/strong>, there is no community<\/strong>, only consumption<\/strong>. But above all, you must align your expectations<\/strong> with your ambitions<\/strong>.
